Don't store your Bodhran in a place with exposure to direct sunlight or heat. Never store your Bodhran in the trunk of your car, especially for long periods of time. A dry environment causes damage to the natural skin.

It is preferable to store your instrument in a cool place with a normal amount of humidity—30 to 60 percent relative humidity is recommended.

If you live in a dry environment and have a natural skin head on your drum, you may notice that the drum head becomes very tight, and may even split in extreme conditions. In the case of a dry environment, consider storing your Bodhran in a humidified instrument case. If this method is too expensive, you can store your drum in a large plastic bag with a damp sponge or a damp cloth, or you can apply a conditioner such as neetsfoot oil or lanolin. When storing your drum in a plastic bag, punch a few holes in the bag to help prevent mildew. Don't be hasty about using a conditioner because this treatment may permanently loosen the skin.

If you live in a damp environment, which may cause your drum head to seem a big too soggy to play, carefully and judiciously heat the natural drum head by rubbing the natural head vigorously or holding it near a heat source until the drum head tightens up to your specifications.

The inside clamps of the Inside Tunable Bodhran avoid most of the issues with skin tension. This is because you can tune the Bodhran easily by tightening or loosening the clamps using a small wrench. Tuning the Bodhran in this manner raises or lowers the pitch of the drum, and helps to adjust for varying humidity without drying or wetting the natural drum head.

Some experts recommend that you loosen the drum head of an Inside Tunable Bodhran a bit when you store the instrument so that the natural skin does not get stretched out of shape, others claim that it doesn't make much of a difference. This is something that you can determine as you become better acquainted with your drum.
