Bongo General Information

Bongos were brought to South America from Africa during the slave trade era. Today, bongo drumming is synonymous with the Cuban music styles known as Changui and Son.

Bongo drum sets are two single-headed drums that manufacturers connect together using a wooden peck (which is a thick piece of wood). It is common for one of the drums in the set to be larger (hembra) than the other (macho). Musicians normally hold the drum set lightly beween their knees, letting the drums rest on their calves. They usually hold the larger drum under their dominant hand, and play the drums using their hands.



Drumhead Information and FAQs

Goatskin generally has a supple texture that will emphasize lower tones. If you use the skins with the hair on, the oils will still be in the skin and will add a more mellow tone, whereas, as with this drumhead, skins with the hair off have a more crisp nature and will have sharper tones.

My drum with a natural skin head is loose. How do I fix it?
Place a damp cloth on the center of the head for 15 minutes. Be careful not to get the edges wet. Allow the head to dry naturally, usually in 24 hours. This will rejuvenate the head.
