Description

Ashiko, Bolt Tuned (Item Code: AKB2) 12 x 24 inches. Engraved rosewood shell with floral design. The head is goatskin and is tunable by bolts.

This African style drum is actually made in Pakistan. The main advantage of this is that the drum is made of rosewood, which almost never cracks and is very tolerant of severe weather conditions.

Drums that actually come from Africa are usually made with exotic local woods that are likely to crack within a year or two when they are not carefully stored in conditions of appropriate temperature and humidity. For the western consumer, rosewood drums are much more stable.



Care and Handling

As with any fine furniture, care should be taken to preserve the beautiful finish of your rosewood drum.

To maintain the finish, dust with a soft cloth. Keep the table away from direct sunlight or heat/airconditioning vents. Because the head and the body of this drum are natural materials, they will be affected by changes in heat and humidity; therefore try to avoid rapid changes in environmental conditions.

The natural oils from your hands will be beneficial to your Drum, so play it often.

Protect your Drum Head from unintentional harm. Try to keep sharp objects away from the head, do not play the drum while wearing rings or wrist jewelry, use soft tipped beaters such as the ones provided rather than wooden sticks, wipe up any spills immediately, and always use coasters for drinks.

Never use harsh cleaners on the table. Scratches in the top can be minimized by rubbing the scratch with a wet rag and letting it dry naturally.



Important

If the sound goes flat, you can re-tune or rejuvenate the head.

If the head is loosened due to humidity, you can tighten the head with a damp cloth placed on the head for about 15 minutes. Then let the head dry naturally. It is important to make sure water does not get into the glue joint. Also, applying heat from a hair dryer will tighten the head.

  • Never use harsh chemicals to clean your drum or the head
  • When not playing your drum do not leave it in a car or vehicle
  • Keep your drum, like all instruments, away from sources of cold or hot air.



Difference between head w/hair vs. one without

A skin with hair on it still has the natural oils which produce more subtle and lower bass tones. Also, the hair (and therefore, natural oils) promotes strength. A skin without hair produces a crisper sound with higher pitches.
